I am Dr Lee Eu Jin, Orthopaedic Surgeon at Liberty Orthopaedic Clinic based in Mount Elizabeth (Orchard) Hospital Singapore.

I specialise in joint reconstruction and sports surgery for the hip and knee, joint replacement surgery, including total hip replacement, total and partial knee replacement.

I am also able to perform arthroscopic key-hole surgery, arthroscopic ligament reconstruction of the knee, minimally invasive techniques, and computer aided surgery.

I graduated from Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ School of Medicine, London (United Kingdom) completed my fellowships in Bern, Switzerland, at the Inselspital (University of Bern), Klinik Sonnenhof and at the MEM Research Centre.

I work closely with the orthopaedic industry in the development of new implants and techniques. I was part of the team in the development of the Dynamic Intraligamental Stabilisation system for anterior cruciate ligament repairs with Mathys European Orthopaedics. This revolutionary technique in cruciate ligament treatment is currently undergoing a Phase 3 evaluation in Europe and I hope to be the first to bring this technique to Asia.

Prior to entering private practice, I was a consultant with Khoo Teck Puat Hospital in Singapore.

I am actively involved in international specialist surgeon training for joint replacement surgery and I lecture as a senior clinical lecturer at the National University of Singapore (NUS).

Doctor, my child is 15 years old and diagnosed with Osteosarcoma. Is this curable? How do we cure this condition?
dr. Lee Eu Jin
replied 11 months ago

Osteosarcoma is a type of aggressive bone cancer. They occur most commonly in teenagers and young adults. It tends to affect the long bone of the thigh (femur) although it can occur in the other bones too. Treatment of such conditions include radiation therapy, chemotherapy and surgery. Treatment plans are based on the doctor's assessment on the patients condition such as the size and grade of the osteoscaroma and if it has spread beyond the bone. Current treatment modalities have significantly improved the outlook and prognosis for these patients. A cure may be achieved!

Doctor, I am a basketball player. I fell during the game 2 months ago and until now my ankle still hurts alot. What should I do? How long does it take for the ankle to become normal again usually?
dr. Lee Eu Jin
replied 10 months ago

Thank you for writing. Pain in the ankle after a game of sports that persists after 2 months will need to be checked carefully. It would be important to evaluate if the problem arises from the bone, joint or ligaments. A very common injury to the ankle from basketball would be a ligament tear in the ankle. This results in instability of the joint. If left untreated, it can cause associated injuries to the joint as well as premature degenerative changes. I would suggest that you go see an orthopaedic surgeon for an evaluation.

Hello and thank you for your query. The presence of a lesion in the finger and having lost motion range is a concern. It would be important to examine the finger and of the lesion itself- especially to determine if the lesion is dangerous or benign. Please get an appointment to see the orthopaedic surgeon.

Doctor, I have pinched nerves in L5 S1. My MRI result shows: minimal Spondylosis lumbal, degenerative and narrowing of disc L5/S1, mild bulging disc L5/S1 to posterior. What treatment is the best for this?
dr. Lee Eu Jin

Hello. Thank you for your query. The problem that you have in the lumbar spine can be treated in many different ways including the use of medications, physiotherapy and surgery. The treatment modality will depend on the severity of the nerve impingement and of the spine itself. I would suggest that you get an appointment with the orthopaedic surgeon for a careful assessment before recommending treatment options.

Doctor, my knee joints are stiff so it is hard for me to squat and stand. I hear a cracking sound when I bend them. Is there any medicine to cure this? I am 49 years old.
dr. Lee Eu Jin
replied 10 months ago

Hello and thank you for your query. The problems in the knees are most commonly due to osteoarthritis. This is a degenerative condition in the knee due to age. It can also be due to previous injuries to the knee. Treatment for this will depend on the severity of the condition. Do arrange for a consultation with your orthopedic doctor and let the doctor assess the condition of your knee. At times a simple course of medication or exercise will suffice, and if bad a knee replacement can be considered.

Our cousin fell and his hip bone shifted. Is surgery the only solution, Doctor?
dr. Lee Eu Jin
replied 10 months ago

Hello and thank you for your query. I believe you mean your cousin fell and suffered a fracture of the hip. It is common that we do surgery to fix the fracture of the hip after a fall. This is to ensure proper restoration of form and function to the hip. The type of surgery to be performed and its risks will depend on the fracture configuration and other patient factors. it would be wise to discuss these with your doctor.

Doctor, my right thumb is stiff, cannot be bent and is painful if I force it. Sometimes, I can bend it but cannot straighten it back. It has been 1 year and now I am 50 years old. Is there any advice?
dr. Lee Eu Jin
replied 10 months ago

hello! and thank you for your query. the problem in your thumb is likely to be a "trigger finger" or "trigger thumb". From your description, this would sound serious enough that you should seek an orthopaedic consult. It'll be important to assess for severity and condition of the thumb before recommending treatment. If left untreated, it will get worse.

dr. Lee Eu Jin
replied 10 months ago

Hello and thank you for your query. Yes, there are procedures that we can do for limb lengthening. However you will need to see an orthopaedic surgeon for review and consult prior to that. There are many points to consider and discuss before such a procedure should be carried out.

Doctor, I have had a surgery to remove the boils from my back shoulder. And now my hand hurts and is hard to lift. What is the solution for this problem?
dr. Lee Eu Jin
replied 10 months ago

Hello and thank you for your query. It is unlikely that surgery for the boils affected your hands directly. The cause of the problem in your hand can be due to problems in the neck, shoulder or in the hand itself. I would suggest that you see your Orthopaedic Doctor to determine the cause of the problem and have it treated appropriately.
